Latino Center Of The Midlands

Established in 1971, Latino Center of the Midlands, formerly known as Chicano Awareness Center, is the oldest and largest Latino-serving agency in Nebraska. Our mission is to enhance the lives of the Heartland Latino Community by supporting the education and development of our youth and adults; promoting comprehensive engagement of our families in all facets of their lives; and by fostering leadership through a variety of services and activities. Latino Center of the Midlands acts as one of the key locations in the metro area where Latino individuals and families can turn to for help and guidance on accessing services to meet short and long term needs, school-based support services, and skills building and foundational adult education classes. The Adult Basic Education (ABE) Program provides Spanish-speaking adult learners with GED, Pre-GED, Basic Literacy, Computer Literacy, and English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction. Classes are offered during the day, evening and on the weekend to accommodate the needs of the adult learner. The Community Services and Technical Assistance (CSTA) Program provides high-quality, comprehensive social service assistance, outreach and advocacy for the Latino community of the greater Omaha area. We focus our efforts on three general areas: social services navigation and basic needs assistance, immigration and legal services navigation and support, and financial stability. The Pathways to Success (P2S) Program aims to reduce chronic school absenteeism and incidence of risky behaviors in high school youth. The program works with students experiencing low levels of academic performance and school attendance at Bryan High School, South High School and Bellevue West High School. Students receive on-site, school-based support services and access to after school programming in order to remove attendance barriers and cultivate leadership potential.
