Hacienda CDC develops affordable housing and builds thriving communities in support of working Latino families and others in Oregon by promoting healthy living and economic advancement. Affordable Rental Housing The first step in Hacienda's community development work is to build dignified affordable housing for Oregon's working Latino families and other recent immigrants. Since its creation in 1992, Hacienda has rehabilitated or built 350 units of affordable housing in some of the most depressed areas of northeast Portland. Quality one- to four-bedroom town homes and apartments are built around community centers, gardens and playgrounds. Home Ownership To promote wealth creation, Hacienda offers down payment assistance to a select group of minority first-time home buyers in Portland and Gresham. Participants are required to attend home buyer education classes, work with a bilingual coach throughout the buying process, and provide 100 hours of community service. Community Building Strengthening families: culturally-specific programs for individuals and families are offered daily throughout the year to residents. Economic Development A group of women residents participate in Micro Mercantes: a micro-enterprise initiative that promotes the sale of prepared food at eight Portland-area farmers markets. This is an innovative model that effectively integrates affordable housing with economic opportunities for upward mobility.
