About Education Justice Project

The Education Justice Project (EJP), headquartered at the University of Illinois in Champaign, is dedicated to transforming the lives of incarcerated individuals through higher education. By establishing a model college-in-prison program at the Danville Correctional Center, EJP demonstrates the profound positive impacts of education on incarcerated people, their families, and the broader community. The initiative offers for-credit courses that empower students to pursue academic growth while fostering a sense of hope and purpose.

EJP's innovative programs extend beyond traditional coursework. Initiatives like the Language Partners ESL program and the Community Anti-Violence Education (CAVE) program were developed by EJP students, showcasing the collaborative spirit of the learning community. Additional offerings include writing and science workshops, guest lectures, mindfulness discussions, a computer lab, and a community library, all designed to enrich the educational experience and promote personal development.

In support of reentry efforts, EJP produces comprehensive reentry guides available for free to incarcerated individuals, their families, and service providers. The scholarship program further enhances opportunities for formerly incarcerated students and their families, providing $1,000 awards to help ease the financial burden of pursuing education. Applications are accepted annually until November 1.

EJP is also committed to advocacy and community engagement, hosting events that foster critical understanding of incarceration and criminal justice issues. For those interested in the teaching aspect of EJP, a comprehensive list of Education Justice Project teachers is available, highlighting the dedicated educators who contribute to this transformative mission. Through its multifaceted approach, EJP not only enriches the lives of individuals but also works towards a more just and equitable society.
