The Tanah Air Project is a newcomer-led climate justice initiative that reframes immigration as a climate issue and belonging as a climate solution. Born out of the Abundance Fellowship by The Youth Harbour, Tanah Air translates to “land and water” in Malay. Together, the phrase evokes the meaning of “homeland.” We work to empower immigrant and racialized communities in Canada through climate education, systems change, and storytelling. Our programs build newcomer capacity to lead in the environmental sector, while fostering solidarity with Indigenous Peoples and advancing climate policy rooted in justice. 📍 Based in British Columbia, we are grounded in three interconnected streams: 🌱 Workshops – Culturally responsive climate literacy and leadership training for newcomers 📜 Policy – Advocacy for a Green Stream immigration pathway that recognizes climate skills 🎨 Storytelling – Dialogue and art exploring land, identity, and the immigrant-Indigenous relationship We’re not just creating programs, we’re building language, leadership, and legitimacy for a more just and inclusive climate future. Tanah Air Foundation is in the midst of being incorporated as a nonprofit society in BC.
