About Michelle Ling

Prior to joining teaching staff at CS 161 Computer Security at UC Berkeley, Michelle completed her undergraduate work at San Francisco State University in 2010, where she majored in industrial engineering. During her undergraduate time, she did research in an area that is closely related to her current job: software engineering. That work included developing software for a company that used a computer security course to explore the security of their software. While at SFSU, Michelle also completed a course in data science, which she enjoyed using to analyze and analyze her undergraduate research data.Of course, working in software engineering isn’t all data science and analysis; during her time at LinkedIn, Michelle got to use her skills in both. She worked on a project that involved Detecting fraudulent deceptive behaviors on LinkedIn dating apps. This project was a collaboration between engineering and data science teams, and she learned a lot from it. In addition, she also worked on a project that improve the stability of LinkedIn profiles. Michelle has also had a few stints as a course reader for CS 161 Computer Security at UC Berkeley. She received her badge and Student Affairs hearing on January 15th, 2015 and read the CS 161 course, "Computer Security." That course was a great opportunity to learn more about computer security and the different ways to secure your computer.
While at University of California, Berkeley, Michelle Ling earned a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science from 2012-2016. She enjoyed her time there and was able to learn in a variety of departments such as Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Ling was responsible for developing a research software project for her major with the help of her head Electricity and Computer Science professor. This experience allowed her to develop her skills in problem solving and critical thinking. Additionally, she enjoyed working as a volunteer programmer and Trainer in the Silicon Valley area.Since her time at UC Berkeley, Ling has been involved in a variety of professional opportunities. Since she started working for Social Work for the Department of Human Services, she has had the opportunity to work with people from all walks of life. Additionally, she has been working as a Research Assistant for a Laboratory of Molecular Genetics at Washington University in St. Louis. Lastly, she is currently a Research Assistant for the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at University of Michigan. In her time as a Professional Social Worker, Ling has learned how to work with people of different ages, cultures, and backgrounds. She has been able to develop her skills in problem solving, critical thinking, and communication.The skills that Ling has learned in her professional experience have helped her in innumerable ways. For example, she has been able to work with people who areitarious backgrounds and have different perspectives. She has also been able to develop relations with other professionals, heath workers, and other members of the community. In her time as a Professional Social Worker, Ling has learned how to work with different types of people and to develop positive relationships with them. She has been able to use her skills in order to help people in their everyday lives.
