• Thesis Project: Investigated the mechanism of tail-anchored membrane protein biogenesis using enzymology and mechanistic biochemistry. • Work Tasks: Set up in vitro biochemical and cell-free lysate systems to investigate how membrane proteins are transported from the cytosol to the ER membrane. Project utilized quantitative fluorescence techniques such as FRET and fluorescence polarization to interrogate protein-protein interactions. Research uncovered a novel chaperone recycling mechanism in membrane protein targeting. Thesis work led to a new direction in the laboratory and served as the basis for a recently obtained RO1 grant. • Additional Projects: Collaborated with both the Clemons and Chan labs at Caltech. Set up biophysical and quantitative cell biology assays for two different structural biology projects leading to high impact publications in the mitochondria and protein targeting fields.
