My former life was quite respectable. I had a career in estate agency, financial services and was an over-achiever, until my father died when i was 21. My life went into a spin, I was hurting, under pressure from taking on a mortgage at such a young age and looking after my younger brother who was in the same predicament. I became reckless. taking risks & drugs to self medicate my depression and leading a hedonistic lifestyle. This led to me committing a series of minor offences culminating in devastation for many people when I killed my friend because I was drink-driving.
I deservedly went to Prison having been sentenced to a small sentence of three years and nine months considering the effects my crime had, however my time in custody opened my eyes.
When I left Prison I started my own business and later became a volunteer, a role not to be under-valued & then a self-employed professional working in Prisons, Probation projects and Youth offending teams. Having led on a West Midlands probation project where I was able to engage over 400 offenders, the support they felt they were lacking was mainly around Education, training and employment which gave me the idea for the New Leaf Initiative CIC.
We provide specialist, realistic, genuine support around release, education, training and employment provided primarily by other ex-offenders who have desisted and are looking to give back as mentors.
This system works. This system is cheaper than custody. We will be evidencing it and are currently working with local prisons and youth offending teams to provide support on a 1-2-1 basis.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Prisoner Employment Specialist and founder of New Leaf CIC @ Currently working with HMP Birmingham and local youth offending teams (gender specific) to deliver Education and work based interventions through innovative practice and support methodology. PTTLs trained, we provide motivational speakers who can share our experiences of change and what it has looked like for us.
Trained peer supporters offer invaluable guidance and through-the-gate support with an individual action plan constructed and co-produced with 100% involvement of the service user.
We run various projects which involve direct casual-employment for some ex-offenders as well as approaching employers who can offer 8 weeks work-experience or volunteering roles with the possibility of paid work opportunities for the most motivated individuals.
We are passionate about creating positive cycles of support for people who want to change and need support from you to continue this work and expand it, gathering evidence on it's success and areas which need further attention.
We work in collaboration with many local businesses to provide room for them to expand using our micro-businesses and staff, in return we rely on them for contracts and a steady flow of work plus general support.
If you would like to get involved or learn more about one of our projects, especially the upcoming employment pilot projects, please contact me or inbox me your number and I'll contact you.
