About Maja Gorzkowicz

📖 Summary

Digital Media Graduate @ BBC Sport (Responsive Team) From September 2015 to Present (4 months) Manchester, United KingdomSoftware Developer / Web Designer @ As part of my course I have been given a chance to work at Tripod Software for a 10-weeks-long industrial placement. Instead of having a general long project, I am given smaller assignments, requiring bigger attention for details and variety of skills, depending on the nature of the task. In the first week I was given a role of web designer of a new Upside Energy website (set to go live in February); in weeks 2-3 I was part of agile development team and got involved in sprint coding an application to improve health care system in Africa. In weeks 4-5 I was assigned various tasks, from conducting tests via PHPunit and protractor, designing application logos and fixing conflicts on branch merges to writing application API and creating for office-only graphics. In week 6 I received a new assignment, exclusively - in-Moodle SCORM testing/quiz page for the company's client in town. In week 7 I took a role of software designer, creating mockups for front-end/applications. The upcoming days are sure to include even more skills gained/enhanced and next interesting projects undertaken by me. The placement journal could be found on WordPress website (taken down after placement completion) in which I described the ups and downs of the placement, as well as code snippets for anyone wishing to learn a bit of my work and for my won personal reference. Upon a successful industrial placement, I received an extended 6-weeks-period at same workplace to focus on my final project - the Master's degree dissertation. This industrial project focused on improving the agile methodologies within the team by further involving the clients (product owners) in the software development. Thanks to the online feedback platform I have constructed, the clients are now able to send in their product feedback (bug reports and/or feature suggestions) for the developers to filter through, prioritise, organise and focus on during the most crucial stages of the development cycles. From January 2015 to June 2015 (6 months) Lancaster, United KingdomSoftware Developer @ After completing the third year dissertation I was able to come back to VisionsLive for a few weeks long full-time placement. During that experience, I would do various small tasks for the company and two bigger projects. The first one was a Angular, Bootstrap and BootstrapUI-based statistics feature of the company's product for the incoming clients' tickets. The important issue about this job was that this feature had to be fully-compatible with all the possible browsers the clients may use, as well as with the already existing system settings and interfaces. The second project revolved around created a time-tracker at work for the company's employees which would be used by the manager. This application had to track the time the employees come in and leave the work, send and accept/refuse sick leaves or holidays and create statistics for the summaries of company performance. This application was created in C#, later to be linked to web services by senior developers. From May 2014 to July 2014 (3 months) Lancaster, United KingdomSoftware Developer (Part-Time) @ After the successful internship at VisionsLive, I was offered a part-time job again as a software developer, taking care of smaller projects over the course of several weeks. One of the most notable ones was an e-mail filtering system for the company consultant created in C#. From October 2013 to January 2014 (4 months) Lancaster, United KingdomSoftware Developer (Internship) @ My internship project was to create a web-application with a 'heatmap' feature. An exemplary use for that product would be to an image of a product uploaded, for instance a car, for the clients/customers to comment on. They could do so by clicking on certain points of the image (in that case, e.g. tires) and leaving a positive/negative/neutral comment ("I like their design", "I want a different colour" etc.). The instance of the comment, as an object, would be saved, with its locations saved as a heat-point. The more interest-points there are in a certain location, the 'hotter' the area becomes, eventually constructing a heat-map of interests. The owners of the application can then easily view all the comments, filter through their types, and observe which areas of the product gained the most positive/negative feedback, etc. I was given exclusive rights to design and conduct the whole project, with the assistance from the senior developer and designer. The project was real-life tested by a business owner in London before the end of the contract and it officially went live soon after I finished the internship. The successful project led me to a part-time and eventually full-time job at the same company for several months. From May 2013 to July 2013 (3 months) Lancaster, United KingdomOpen Day Helper @ Lancaster University Open Day is a very important date in the university's calendar - needed to promote and show the facilities and student life to the potential students. I was hired as the so-called Red Umbrella Guide (the accessory marking my role) and sent to various posts around the campus to help the parents and the pupils answer their questions and concerns they might have about choosing my university. I have spent many hours guiding, directing and talking to various unknown to me before people, developing communication and customer service skills. On one occasion a couple from Germany lost their son in the crowd and were looking for the library to meet him there. Because of their poor English I had to rely on my long-time-unused German knowledge and eventually explained them the way to the facility and also answered some basic questions. Few hours later, I encountered them again at a different post, reunited with their child. From September 2012 to September 2012 (1 month) Lancaster, United KingdomMaster's degree, Computer Science with Industrial Experience, First Class @ Lancaster University From 2011 to 2015 Higher Level, International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme @ International School of EKOLA in Wroclaw, Poland From 2009 to 2011 Maja Gorzkowicz is skilled in: Programming, JavaScript, Java, HTML 5, Software Design, CSS, PHP, HTML5, jQuery, Teamwork, CSS3, Web Design, MySQL, SQL, Agile Methodologies
