About Gerry Docherty

I am Chief Executive of Smarter Grid Solutions, providing active grid management for major energy generators and distributors. We are fast-growing, with current bases in Glasgow, London and New York. I was the founding Managing Director of Real Time Engineering in 1988. Over the following 18 years, the company developed to become one of Scotland's largest and most successful indigenous IT organisations, and was acquired by Sword Group in late 2006. In 2000, I became the founding Chairman of ScotlandIS, the trade association for ICT companies in Scotland. In 2003 and 2004, I served on the board of Scotland the Brand, promoting Scottish products and excellence abroad. From 2002 to 2010, I served as a member of the Advisory Board for ICS Scotland, responsible for Scotlandâs most successful company incubation facility. In 2008, I was appointed as Chair of the ICT Forum for Scotland, advising on the use of ICT to improve the productivity of the nation. From 2009 to 2011, I was chair of the ICT Advisory Group for Scottish Enterprise, advising on the growth of the ICT industry in Scotland. I am now a board member of the Technology and Advanced Engineering Group, and Chair of the ICT/Digital Skills Group. From 2008 to 2013, I was Chair of the Advisory Group for Common Purpose in Glasgow. I am a member of the Par Equity syndicate, investing in young companies in the ICT and sustainable technologies arenas, and an Entrepreneur in Residence at the University of Edinburgh's Informatics Forum. I hold an honorary doctorate from Edinburgh Napier University, and I am a visiting Professor at the University of Strathclyde. I live in the east end of Glasgow, and am married with one daughter, who is an up-and-coming lawyer (hooray â pension sorted!).
