The “Space Copy 3D Printer” project details the development of a 3D printer that analyzes lunar soil samples and uses IR/Raman spectroscopy to analyze the chemical composition of regolith, and create a database with an accompanying catalog that lists what the printer can create with the lunar soil.
Developing technology for in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) of lunar regolith is one of the main priorities of current aerospace manufacturing. "Space Copy" introduces a rapidly deployable technology that allows astronauts on the lunar surface to conduct soil sample tests, and then utilize these resources to create tangible goods that will help extend their mission. "Space Copy" would be readily available for use on both the Moon and Mars.
"Space Copy" utilizes a hybrid of stereolithography and selective laser sintering to combine regolith powders and carbon-based filaments (such as thermoplastics, mooncrete, and fibre-based materials) to create its prototypes which include:
- Replacement parts for lunar structures and rovers
- Radiation-proof thermal insulation tiles
- Spacesuits
- Solar panel cells, and much more...
"Space Copy" measures approximately 4x4 metres, which allows it to print multiple items (both small and large) simultaneously within a limited time span. The structure is enclosed in a spaceflight-approved thermal insulation tent (made of Kevlar and Nextel); and has two FTIR/Raman lasers located beside the filament extruder. There are attached solar panels, as well as a plug-in system allows astronauts on the lunar surface to utilize additional solar energy in permanently shadowed regions. The "Space Copy 3D printer" is suited for in-situ use or via rover; demonstrating both its versatility and importance.
