When confronted with cancer, a patient faces his or her own mortality. Many questions are asked.
It is at these times that ROH complements the technical side of cancer care and provides encouragement to patients on their journey.
ROH began in 1999 through the courage and vision of a cancer survivor. Through the support of friends, family and a congregation, ROH grew very quickly. The need to partner with others became evident. Over time God has drawn others to the vision.
In 2000, ROH became a not-for-profit, formed a partnership with Elkhart General Hospital, and opened an office on their campus in an effort to offer additional support to cancer patients.
In 2005, ROH formed the first board of directors. ROH continues to establish itself as an independent 501(c)3 non-profit while playing a supportive role within EGH's cancer care program by working alongside their oncology staff and by providing spiritual and emotional care to patients who are admitted as well as those securing outpatient chemotherapy and radiation.
In 2022, ROH relocates its administrative offices. ROH continues to provide services in partnership with Elkhart General Hospital while expanding its outreach throughout the Elkhart County community by embracing its vision to grow. The administrative offices were relocated, which allowed more accessible service to patients outside of the hospital and greater visibility in the community.
Today, one patient’s vision has grown to a team of committed individuals who donate time, providing spiritual and emotional support to cancer patients, family members, and caregivers throughout Michiana. A journey that began as a serious medical challenge for one person, has now assisted more than 3,000 people facing a cancer diagnosis.
ROH offers a variety of practical services. With the primary focus of caring for spiritual and emotional needs, volunteers get involved in the lives of patients and their families. Personal interaction is the heart of our service.
