Japanese Weekend Maternity owner/designer Barbie White majored in dance at the University of Oregon. After moving to San Francisco in the mid-seventies, she founded Oblong Rhonda, an urban modern dance company. Japanese Weekend was named after a dance performance choreographed by Barbie in the late seventies. White's experience with dance has aided her ability to design for the moving, changing body. Japanese Weekend Maternity designs have changed the way mothers-to-be look at maternity wear. Gone are the days of sloppy upsizing and non-functional clothing. Gone are the big bows and Peter Pan collars of "traditional" maternity wear.
