Exmoor was first designated as a National Park in 1954. Since then, the co-ordination of work to achieve in the area has been undertaken by local government and since 1997 by a free standing Exmoor National Park Authority.
Our two main objectives (National Park purposes) are:
- "To conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the National Park"
- "To promote opportunities for the understanding and enjoyment of the special qualities of the National Park by the public"
Around 80 staff work in the 267 square miles of Exmoor National Park Authority, providing a range of services to the (c.11,000) residents and nearly 2 million annual visitors, supported by a highly knowledgeable ‘crew’ of volunteers.
Stunning landscapes, dark skies, and tranquility - glimpse wild Red Deer (largest mammal in the UK) or the native Exmoor Pony who roam freely over the moor.
A warm rural welcome awaits you in Exmoor National Park.
