Welcome to Edendale, the historical birthplace of film comedy in Los Angeles. In 1912, Mack Sennett opened Keystone Studios at 1712 Glendale Blvd., the world's first fully enclosed film stage and studio. Sennett brought with him talents such as Charlie Chaplin, Mabel Normand, Gloria Swanson, Fatty Arbuckle and Frank Capra to Keystone to help him make hundreds of short films. The Keystone Cops and the Bathing Beauties were big hits with audiences, and Chaplin introduced his famed character The Tramp through Keystone.
The front of EFS stands where Mack Sennett kept his private offices, and the back of the building (Evidence Cameras) is where his daytime atelier was located. In the photo above, the atelier is the large boxy structure with silk roof, which was used to shoot with natural daylight due to low sensitivity of celluloid film of the day. Mr. Sennett's office was the two story structure to the left of the atelier.
EFS opened its doors in 2012, the centennial anniversary of Keystone Studio's opening in July of 1912. We are honored to bring Los Angeles filmmaking back to Edendale, and look forward to making new movie history in Echo Park.
