We at Pediatric Solutions believe that children deserve products specifically tailored to their needs. By developing pediatric focused products, we aim to elevate consumer confidence and expand category reach. As a pediatrician based in Houston, I have had the privilege of serving our diverse community for the past 7 years. During this time, I was able to identify an opportunity to fill a significant market gap by developing an over the counter (OTC) pediatric solution for seborrheic dermatitis, also known as “cradle cap.” One in three children in their first year of life get some degree of flaking, redness, scaling, and irritation of the scalp and skin. These bothersome symptoms are known as seborrheic dermatitis. Many families try oils or petroleum jelly which often leads to treatment failure and further frustration. Non-medicated cradle cap formulations currently available do not effectively treat this condition and lead to equal frustration. Many pediatricians encounter seborrheic dermatitis on average 2 to 4 times per day in their office. During my recent tenure as president of the Houston Pediatric Society, I surveyed the doctors and found that like myself 73% of doctors in the organization were recommending an adult dandruff shampoo (as suggested in the pediatric literature) to treat this pediatric condition. These adult dandruff shampoos work to address the issue of seborrheic dermatitis, but they were designed for the skin of an adult and many times have strong fragrances and surfactants that are not suited to dry, irritated skin. In addition, parents feel uncomfortable when an “adult” product is recommended to treat their 2 months old’s sensitive scalp. The parent survey concluded that the vast majority of consumers were extremely likely or very likely to purchase the product were it available in stores, and 73% of pediatricians surveyed said they would recommend Happy Cappy when it came to market.
