Born December 10, 1944, in Paintsville, Kentucky, James Pharr owed his start in business to his father. Growing up, James Pharr loved working with his hands, and his interest in traditional engineering started early. As a high schooler, James Pharr became the lifeguard at his local pool and developed a strong interest in swimmer’s life saving techniques. As a Junior at the high school, James Pharr met and began dating his future wife, Lori. After graduating high school in 1960, James Pharr attended the University of Kentucky, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering. James Pharr worked his way up through the ranks at Kentucky Kentucky Instruments in Richmond, Kentucky, before becoming the company president in 1977. In this position, James Pharr led the company through several significant changes, including the introduction of its first electronic control system.During his time at the company, James Pharr was known for his innovative thinking and his drive to improve products and services. He was the driving force behind many of the company’s successes, including its growth into a global powerhouse. James Pharr was educated in Business Administration at South Arkansas University. From October 1963 to October 1967, James Pharr earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. After receiving his degree, JamesPharr continued his education at Fair Park High School where he earned a Basic Education degree in Business/Managerial Economics. After completing his education at Fair Park High School, James Pharr began his work experience with the Arkansas Department of Workforce Development. From October 20, 2009 until his retirement in October of 2009, James Pharr served as the Chancellor of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. James Pharr's retirement was effective October 20, 2009. From February 2011 to February 2011, James Pharr served as the Chancellor of the University of Houston. From November 1, 2011 to November 1, 2011, James Pharr was the Provost of the University of Houston. From October 20, 2012 until his retirement in October of 2012, James Pharr served as the Chancellor of the Texas Tech University System. At Texas Tech University System, James Pharr was a Professor of Business Administration for two years. During this time, he also served as the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. James Pharr's retirement was effective October 20, 2012. From February 2013 to February 2013, James Pharr served as the Chancellor of the University of Texas at Dallas. From November 1, 2013 to November 1, 2013, James Pharr was the Provost of the University of Texas at Dallas. From October 20, 2014 until his retirement in October of 2014, James Pharr served as the Chancellor of the University of Central Texas. At University of Central Texas, James Pharr was a Professor of Business Administration for five years. During his time as the Chancellor, James Pharr successfully revitalized the School of Business and the School of Economics. James Pharr's retirement was effective October 20, 2014.
