QMUL Apprenticeships

QMUL has an explicit purpose, defined in our institutional strategy; “we are dedicated to the public good, pursuing the creation and dissemination of knowledge to the highest international standards, thereby transforming wider society and the lives of our students and staff.” The apprenticeship agenda fits neatly with this and other core values around widening participation and opportunities, community engagement and innovation.We are already piloting Laboratory Technician and Laboratory Scientist apprenticeships in the School of Physics and Astronomy; IT Services are upskilling existing members of staff in several different roles; Estates and Facilities have two Electrical Installation Engineer apprentices and a Hospitality Supervisor apprentice due to start shortly. Our official launch, during National Apprenticeship Week, saw dedicated events for staff to consider opportunities and discuss practicalities with an array of training providers and existing apprentices. The engagement from this event will lead to many more apprenticeship opportunities for staff across all of our departments. In 2015, Queen Mary became one of the first Higher Education Institutions in the United Kingdom to deliver Degree Apprenticeships. We are currently the only London-based member of the prestigious Russell Group to have such an offering and consequently partner with a number of the worlds leading enterprises in order to meet their workforce plans and training needs.Due to our location, Queen Mary is uniquely positioned to deliver Degree Apprenticeship programmes to industry with the utmost convenience, minimum disruption and to the highest academic and professional standards. We partner with a diverse range of employers including a number of leading international financial services firms and banks, global pharmaceutical firms, national retailers, IT/technology companies and a growing number of SME’s and organisations from the third and charitable sectors.
