Established in 1971, the San Raffaele Hospital is one of the top centers of Gruppo San Donato (Italy’s largest hospital group, treating over 4.7 million patients yearly). San Raffaele University & Research Hospital is an institute that incorporates clinical, research and university activities altogether, while being internationally recognized for its specialization in some of the most complex pathologies. The hospital is a multi-specialty center with more than 50 clinical specialties covered and over 1300 beds, which is accredited by the Italian National Health System to provide treatment to both public and private, national and international patients. In 2016, the San Raffaele Hospital performed nearly 51,000 patient admissions, 67,700 emergency room interventions and delivered over 7 million healthcare services, including outpatient appointments and diagnostic exams. It is considered to be the most famous hospital in the country and among the most reputable medical centers in Europe. Starting with 2001, the institute has been awarded the prestigious title of IRCCS (given by the Italian State to institutions that carry out scientific research aimed at cure quality improvement) for innovations brought in the Molecular Medicine and Gene Therapy fields. The research branch of San Raffaele Hospital spreads over 130,000 square meters, counting more than 1,500 scientists that work in state-of-the-art facilities, who, in 2018 alone, produced 1446 scientific publications - with a total impact factor of 8,545. The San Raffaele Hospital hosts the Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele, a fully private university with a complete Medical School (including specialty courses and residencies), Nursing School, Psychology graduate and post-graduate programs, and Allied Health Professions School. Starting with 2010, the San Raffaele Hospital also hosts the International MD Program, the only graduate program accredited to license Medical Doctors in both Europe and North America.
