About National Industries for the Blind

NIB’s mission is to enhance the opportunities for economic and personal independence of persons who are blind, primarily through creating, sustaining and improving employment. NIB, a 501(c)(3) Central Non-profit Agency, was founded in 1938 and is headquartered in Alexandria, VA. NIB operates under the Javits-Wagner-O’Day (JWOD) Act and executes the AbilityOne® Program, a federal program that enables people who are blind to work while providing products and services to federal customers. With more than 80 years of experience, NIB has a network of 152 associated non-profit agencies in 250 locations across 39 states that provide products and services in support of the AbilityOne® Program. We employ nearly 6,000 people who are blind and produce more than 7,000 products.
