The Royal Life Guards has since the founding in 1658 trained soldiers for two equally important tasks:
- Infantry units (until 1866 also cavalery) to protect Danish interests both national and international, most recently in Iraq and Afghanistan.
- Guard units protecting the monarch of Denmark.
- Have a Quick Reaction Force in Copenhagen to support Danish Police.
