Overview:The Menil Collection was opened in 1987 by Dominique de Menil who, with her late husband John, had a vision of sharing their extraordinary art collection (16,000 pieces) with Houston and the world.
Over 130,000 visitors come each year from around the world.
The Menil actively collects.
The museum enjoys an international reputation for the quality of its collection, exhibitions, its architecture, serene campus and devotion to scholarship. The museum experience reflects respect for, and the primacy of, the art.
Few institutions remain free to the public. One of the museum’s core values is to be accessible to everyone.
The museum has an endowment, provided by Mrs. de Menil; yet it does not cover operations, given the scope of the museum’s activities. A full 31% of operations is funded by philanthropy.
We are engaged in development of a master site plan which will preserve the neighborhood’s serenity, yet allow the Menil to grow.
We want you to join and become involved at the Menil.
