The Donkey Sanctuary is an international animal welfare charity, with headquarters at Sidmouth, in Devon, UK and operating directly or indirectly through partnerships and collaboration in 27 countries.
Over 50 million donkeys and mules exist in the world today. Many need care and protection from a life of suffering and neglect, whilst others have a vital role to play in human survival and happiness.
Our vision is a world where donkeys and mules live free from suffering, and their contribution to humanity is fully valued.
Over 5,600 donkeys and mules are currently in our care in the UK, Ireland and Europe and as many as 12 are arriving every week; and our international teams ease the suffering of over 400,000 sick and injured donkeys and mules globally every year through mobile clinics, community engagement and partnership work with donkey-owning communities.
Donkeys and mules have a special affinity with people. Through our donkey assisted therapy centres and projects in the world, the lives of children with additional needs are being immeasurably improved by the emotional, mental and physical therapy that close contact with our rescued donkeys can provide.
All this incredible work was started more than 45 years ago by Dr Elisabeth Svendsen MBE. She dedicated her life to champion donkeys, and it is only through her amazing devotion that the Sanctuary grew to the international charity it is today. Sadly Dr Svendsen passed away in 2011 but her memory lives on in our work.
The Donkey Sanctuary is a registered charity and we rely entirely on donations and legacy gifts to fulfil our worldwide work with donkeys and mules. There are many ways you can help us, from fostering donkeys and mules, making a donation or grant towards our work, reporting cruelty anywhere in the world, becoming a quality time volunteer or remembering the donkeys in your will.
