Indigenized Energy Initiative (IEI) is a Native-led nonprofit organization focused on leveraging the power of renewable energy as a means to diminish poverty, mitigate climate change, and promote restoration of self determination and hope in Native American communities.
The organization was originally founded as Covenant Solar Initiative in 2016 in response to the inspiring leadership of American Indian tribes in resisting fossil fuels and their growing desire to realize the regenerative potential of renewable energy on tribal lands.
After many years working alongside Native American leaders to deploy solar demonstration projects in their communities, IEI is now supporting multiple American Indian tribes in their self-determined efforts to develop energy master plans, deploy strategic clean energy projects, and create a workforce of tribal members to create the infrastructure necessary to support energy independence.

Indigenized Energy Initiative offers a range of services focused on renewable energy, particularly solar energy. These services include solar project development, energy planning, solar consulting, and educational training programs tailored for Indigenous communities. IEI aims to empower Native American tribes by providing them with the tools and knowledge necessary to harness renewable energy resources effectively.
IEI supports Indigenous communities by facilitating solar project development from inception to completion. This includes conducting feasibility studies, assisting with project financing, and providing technical support throughout the installation process. IEI also emphasizes community engagement and capacity building, ensuring that local stakeholders are involved and trained in the management and maintenance of solar energy systems.
Solar energy presents a significant opportunity for Native American communities to achieve energy independence, reduce energy costs, and create sustainable economic development. By investing in solar projects, these communities can mitigate the impacts of climate change, enhance energy security, and promote job creation in the renewable energy sector. Additionally, solar energy aligns with many Indigenous values related to stewardship of the land and natural resources.
Yes, IEI offers comprehensive training and educational programs focused on solar energy. These programs are designed to equip Indigenous community members with the skills and knowledge needed to design, install, and maintain solar energy systems. Training sessions may include workshops, hands-on demonstrations, and partnerships with educational institutions to ensure a thorough understanding of solar technology and its applications.
Tribes can collaborate with IEI by reaching out to discuss their specific energy needs and goals. IEI is committed to building partnerships with Indigenous communities to develop tailored renewable energy solutions. This collaboration can involve joint project development, access to funding opportunities, and sharing best practices in energy planning and policy advocacy. Interested tribes are encouraged to contact IEI to explore potential partnerships.
Policy plays a crucial role in IEI's efforts to promote renewable energy within Indigenous communities. IEI advocates for policies that support tribal energy sovereignty, access to renewable energy resources, and equitable funding for solar projects. By engaging with policymakers and stakeholders, IEI aims to create a favorable regulatory environment that empowers Indigenous communities to pursue their energy goals and address barriers to renewable energy adoption.
