William Jahmal Miller was born in 1938 in Detroit, Michigan. During the late 1940s and early 1950s, Miller’s father was a white doctor in a black neighborhood and he was raised with an appreciation for the rich cultural diversity of his city.Miller started his studies at the University of Southern California in January of 1957. While at USC, Miller began his undergraduate degree in sport administration, majoring in physical education and sport. However, after just three years at USC, Miller switched to the health sciences major, which he completed in 1966. Miller continued his studies at Columbia University in New York City, where he received his doctorate in health management in 1969. While at Columbia, Miller also received additional doctorates in business Administration, public health, and health education.Miller’s work experience began in the early 1960s as a visiting professor at the University of Illinois. From 1964 to 1966, Miller was a research doctor at the University of Minnesota, where he directed the Human Nutrition Department. From 1969 to 1971, Miller served as the interim dean of the Graduate School of Public Health at the University of Missouri.Miller retired as a professor at the University of Missouri in 1998. In his retirement, Miller focused on his work as an MHA educator. He is currently a visiting professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where he provides educational programs on the topics of health and illness.Miller hasThroughout his public life, Miller has been an advocate for healthcare reform and has been music to the ears of health managers and administrators.
