This work was commissioned by the National Swedish Transport Research Board (KFB) and the National Swedish Road Administration (NSRA). Dr Persson was responsible for a research team of 6-7 people who conducted three empirical research programs in order to estimate methods for valuing risk reductions in the road transport sector. Results from these studies provided estimates of the value of a statistival life and injuries and they are used in the regulation of traffic safety in Sweden. For example, the investment of all new roads has to undergo an economic evaluation where the benefit of safety is valued based on results from these studies. He has also developed models for economic analysis of accidents during the transportation of dangerous materials, such as ammonia and petrol. Results are used by the Swedish road and train regulatory authorities in the regulation of dangerous transportation and in the appraisal of new safety measures.
