Board Member @ Independent member of the board of directors. From November 2014 to Present (1 year 2 months) Greater New York City AreaEngineering Manager @ Managing the security & privacy engineering teams in Google NYC. From November 2014 to Present (1 year 2 months) Greater New York City AreaAdvisor @ Advice on hiring, engineering, leadership, and education administration to the head of AltSchool's NYC office. From April 2014 to Present (1 year 9 months) Greater New York City AreaAdvisor @ Advice on hiring, strategy, and technology. From 2013 to Present (2 years) Board Member @ Independent member of the board of directors. From May 2005 to Present (10 years 8 months) Sr. Director, Technology & Innovation, Criminal Justice Initiative @ Contribute to policy and initiatives in support of LJAF's mission to improve fairness, efficiency, and effectiveness in the criminal justice system. Among other projects we funded or supported, I directly worked on: * an evidence-based risk estimation tool to help judges estimate the chance that a defendant will fail to appear or commit a crime on pretrial release * a tablet app to guide police & victims through eyewitness identification procedures with an easier to administer process that minimizes false identifications. * a study to measure the effectiveness of phone calls and text messages in reminding defendants to come to court, reducing FTAs and resultant bench warrants. From February 2013 to October 2014 (1 year 9 months) Greater New York City AreaAdvisor @ I advised Songza's leadership on technical and engineering management questions in an engagement that saw them through meteoric growth, capped by an acquisition by Google. Songza now powers Google Play Music's curated radio stations. From September 2012 to July 2014 (1 year 11 months) CTO, Huffington Post Media Group @ Leading the engineering, design and product teams for the Huffington Post and all other HPMG sites. From October 2011 to February 2012 (5 months) Board Member, Co-President @ While I have been on the board, we've moved the school to a new, larger, unified location, materially improved the school's financial position, and hired two executive directors. From 2007 to October 2011 (4 years) Software Engineer / Tech Lead / Manager @ Managing staffing applications engineering at Google. Google has a large team working on recruiting; they hire many thousands of people each year from more than a million applicants. I lead the team that delivers the custom software platforms we use to do this, all built in-house. I manage about 35 engineers in two offices. I was called in to take over a troubled engineering team (many new hires, no management leadership, lots of junior engineers, and a large and challenging legacy codebase) and formed them into a high-functioning team. We've kept our legacy systems running and responding to substantial growth in Google recruiting activity while building innovative new products to address Google recruiting process challenges and using a broader set of engineering tools, including broader outsourcing & using purchased software. Recruited engineers internally to a seemingly unappealing product area by developing & emphasizing the quality of the work environment & the team. From 2009 to 2011 (2 years) Software Engineer / Tech Lead / Manager @ TV Ads (Adsense for Television) project: Built and led a team in NYC that focused on detailed information about the demographics & other characteristics of TV advertising audiences, leading to development of a "bid on and buy your audience". Analyzed large datasets (second-by-second TV viewing data for millions of US households joined with household demographic information and Nielsen ratings data). Designed & built a new user interface for advertisers to choose which programs to bid on, including an innovative system for building a campaign that will optimally spend an advertiser's budget (reach households with desired characteristics at lowest possible in-target CPM while spending the full budget). From 2007 to 2009 (2 years) Software Engineer / Tech Lead / Manager @ Print Ads: Led newspaper ads engineering team (placing ads in newspapers for Google advertisers). I took this team over, spent some time with the business, and prompted a decision to exit the business, as we couldn't find a strong enough added-value traction to overcome general industry and publishing partner problems. From 2008 to 2008 (less than a year) Software Engineer / Tech Lead / Manager @ AdSense for Feeds & FeedBurner: Led an investigative engineering team into placing advertising into publisher content syndicated via RSS and similar technologies. Led technical investigation of FeedBurner, a company with an established business in this space, and championed acquisition of that company; led FeedBurner's engineering team for a year while they were integrating into Google until a local manager in Chicago could be hired. From 2006 to 2007 (1 year) Software Engineer / Tech Lead @ Google Checkout project: Founded the Checkout project with an idea pursued in Google's 20% time and shepherded it through growth & reinvention until it emerged as Google Checkout; led NY engineering team, which did all merchant-side integration & tools. From January 2004 to 2006 (2 years) CTO @ From 1996 to 2002 (6 years) VP Engineering @ Founded product business, built SSL+, a successful SSL library, and sold the company to Certicom From January 1996 to June 1998 (2 years 6 months) Engineer @ From 1991 to 1996 (5 years) Mac Developer Support @ From 1990 to 1991 (1 year) Tim Dierks is skilled in: Technical Leadership, Security, Distributed Systems, Software Engineering, Software Design, Architecture, Agile Methodologies, Cloud Computing, Cryptography, Payments, Digital Media, Product Management, Web Analytics, Television Research, Technical Recruiting
