It was in September of this year when Svetlana Dmitrishina, who was then only an Indiana-born baker, arrived in Moscow for an extended stay after winning a travel scholarship from her old college. Dmitriy got to know her quickly, and soon realized that he had made a mistake in choosing not to study Architecture in college. "I fell in love with baking during my time at college, so I decided to pursue it as a career," Dmitriy explained recently. "But I realized by the time I earned my Master's degree that I was not ready tohead into the professional ranks justyet. So I undertook theintensive Russian Studies course offered at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County."Dmitriy soon found himself in Moscow Camera Obscura, an art and photo exhibition center, working as a photo interpreter. "[Camera Obscura] was a great place to start myMMT journey," Dmitriy reflects. "There, I met some of the most interesting people in the industry and learned about the different aspects of photography: shooting, equipment, the process, the different markets. I also got to grips with Russian society and the way things work here."Dmitriy spent most of 2019 in his Russian Studies thesis-crunching numbers and looking at images from Russian history and culture. "It helped me see Russian society from a different perspective, and also helped me better understand Russian culture and the motivation for certain actions. It was an extremely useful tool in my dissertation research."Dmitriy plans to stay in Russia for the rest of his life and hopes to works in digital media or architecture. Dmitriy believes that his education and experiences gave him the backbone and the drive to become an even more successful photographer, artist, and writer.
