I've help launch five publications: Internet World, [email protected] Week, [email protected] Reseller/Partner, Linux Watch, and Practical Technology. I've also written four technology books.
Away from the keyboard, I often appeared as a keynote speaker, panel leader, and solo speaker at Comdex, LinuxWorld, NetWorld+Interop, Seybold, OSCon, LinuxCon, All Things Open, and many other technology trade shows. I've also appeared on multiple radio and TV networks including ABC, BBC, CBC, CBS, Slashdot, and TWIT.TV.
As an editor, my publication's news section won the American Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE) Gold award in 1998, the Bronze award in 1999, and the Silver award for best technical article in 2000. As a writer, I won the ASBPE Bronze award for Analysis/Commentary Blog for my ComputerWorld blog in 2009; I won the IDG Enterprise Editorial Excellence Award for a how-to feature in 2014; and the IDG Enterprise Editorial Excellence Award for a Best Insider story in 2015.
I've also done expert witness work on cases involving consumer electronics, computer system performance, software, and operating systems.
To sum up, I'm a business and technology journalist with experience from editor-in-chief to writer and from highly technical publications (IEEE Computer, ACM NetWorker, Byte) to business publications (eWEEK, InformationWeek, InfoWorld) to popular technology (Computer Shopper, PC Magazine, PC World) to the mainstream press (Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle). 2014/2015 publications include: CBS/ZDNet, CIO, CIO Engage, ComputerWorld, Continiuum, CSC Blogs, Druvia, IT World, Network World, PC World, TechProRearch, and SmartBear.Contributing Editor @ For CBS/ZDNet, I write news, reviews, feature and opinion coverage on a variety of topics. From April 1989 to Present (26 years 9 months) Asheville, North Carolina AreaColumnist @ I covered the entertainment side of networking: Apple TV, Roku, Netflix, Hulu, Content Delivery Networks, etc., etc. From May 2012 to February 2013 (10 months) Editor at Large @ I was the editor for two Ziff Davis Enterprise publications: Linux-Watch and DesktopLinux, In addition, I wrote op/ed and analysis pieces on a variety of business and technology subjects for eWEEK and Channel Insider. From August 2007 to April 2008 (9 months) Editor @ I was the editor for Linux and open source across Ziff Davis Internet publications. In this position, I oversaw, edited and wrote for the following ZD Web publications: Linux-Watch, Desktop Linux, Linux Devices and eWEEK.com. From November 2005 to July 2007 (1 year 9 months) Senior Editor @ Back to being a fulltime Ziff staffer again. In addition to open source and Linux coverage for eWEEK.com, I oversaw channel-related coverage and wrote about a variety of other business and technology-related topics. I was also the lead columnist for Linux Watch. From June 2004 to November 2005 (1 year 6 months) eWeek.com Site Editor @ I wrote, edited, and managed Linux and open source coverage for eWEEK.com From September 2003 to May 2004 (9 months) Editor at Large @ I oversaw this value-added reseller/system integrator magazines technology sections and its staff of four editors. I also wrote a very popular weekly column, Cyber Cynic, about how technology and business all too often fail to deliver on their promises and what you can do about it. Additionally, I wrote technology and business news and features.
