Steve Neilson has a BSc in Earth Sciences from Glasgow Caledonian University. He then gain an MSc in Geological Survey from the University of Wales, predecessor of the University of Wales, Bangor.From there, Steve Neilson earned his PhD in Geological Survey from the University of Wales, Bangor, where he worked on land analysis and interpretation of geological data.After completing his PhD, Steve Neilson worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Geological Survey of Canada before finally joining the University of Hawaii at Manoa inhawaii in 2016 as a professor. presently he is the chair of the Geological Survey of the Hawaiian Islands department and a Research fellow at the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa.
