Born and raised in the town of La Crosse, Wisconsin, Steve started working on computers in the early Seventies at a Western Wisconsin regional tech company called Computer Concepts. He learned how to program in the early Eighties at the now-defunct Technical Center in La Crosse, which was the first software company in town. Steve also served as the floor manager for the La Crosse-based young adult basketball team. Eventually, he transferred to California to attend Stanford where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration in 1985. Settling in Palo Alto, California, Steve worked at several technology startups beforeComputer Concepts was sold in 1991 to what was then Silicon Graphics, Inc. Steve spent the next eleven years working for Silicon Graphics, starting out as a software development manager and then moving up through the ranks to become a Vice President and then a President. He left Silicon Graphics in 1998 to become the youngest CEO in Silicon Graphics history, taking over from Bill Gates.Steve returned to Palo Alto and co-founded Fremont, California’s first dot-com company (Qool.com) in January 1997. He was named CEO in January 2003 and led the company until its acquisition by Microsoft in June 2007. In 2017, Microsoft announced that Steve would retire at the end of the year.Steve has served on the boards of directors for six technology firms, including Power.com/Power Ventures Inc., Serendipity Ventures, and Freelotto. He has also been a member of the board of directors for the Silicon Valley Forum, where he chairs the division on technology and innovation. He is a member of the[] Yale graduating class of 1988.
