Engineering Site Director @ From November 2015 to Present (2 months) Greater Denver AreaSr. Director of Technology @ I joined Delivery Agent to scale a software engineering organization and technology platform in the wake of multiple corporate acquisitions.
Working directly with the CTO, I matured the organization through coaching, training, and hiring/promoting front-line leaders. I partnered with executives, product management, and IT to ensure that engineering was 100% aligned to the business strategy. I leveraged scaled agile principles to improve predictability and efficiency.
I drove collaboration and cohesiveness across engineering teams in 3 cities by spearheading the unification of our disparate technology platforms. This included facilitating the leadership group through complex problem solving, and delivering large projects on time using scaled agile principles/methodology.
Key deliverables included meeting quarterly schedule commitments, improving employee retention, maintaining system availability/PCI compliance, and increasing stakeholder confidence in the organization. From November 2014 to November 2015 (1 year 1 month) Director of Product Management and Engineering @ I was responsible for product management of Rally's core product, with all product managers and product marketing managers as direct reports, representing our product strategy and execution directly to the executive team. Key deliverables included the feature set and user experience in Rally Unlimited Edition, plus enablement of the Sales organization, industry analysts, and media. We grew product revenue 30% YOY with a focus on differentiating features and UX improvements.
I was also given responsibility for software engineering of Rally's core product, with all engineering managers and architecture leads as direct reports (total organization size was 50+). Key deliverables included making and meeting roadmap commitments, achieving high quality and system performance, improving engineering throughput with tools and process investments, and aligning the architecture roadmap to the product strategy. From April 2012 to August 2014 (2 years 5 months) Director of Software Engineering @ I was responsible for software engineering for the Horizon Ambulatory Care business, with all engineering/QA managers, architecture leads, and project managers as direct reports (total organization size was 80+), reporting to the General Manager. I turned around a struggling organization -- suffering from missed commitments, low throughput, poor quality, dissatisfied customers, disengaged employees -- by changing the technology vision, culture, processes, and tools.
Key ingredients in the turnaround included:
• building high-trust relationships with stakeholders and key customers
• enterprise agile transformation
• migrating client-server architecture to a web technology stack
• implementing continuous integration tools to reduce build/deploy time
• retaining top talent while addressing low performers
The outcome was a high performing engineering organization that continues to meet demanding product roadmap commitments. From July 2008 to April 2012 (3 years 10 months) Senior IT Manager @ I was responsible for management of the RPOS application used at all of Vail Resorts' ski resorts, with all software engineers as direct reports. Key deliverables include design and delivery of new features to streamline and improve the guest experience, partnering with other departments to launch new products, and support/maintenance of a system that supported 6.3M skier visits annually.
We designed, developed, and implemented an innovative (patent-protected) Radio Frequency ID (RFID) infrastructure across the ski resorts that has become the foundation for the unique EpicMix product line. Key deliverables included vendor selection and management, system architecture, development, QA, and field testing. From May 2007 to July 2008 (1 year 3 months) Manager of Software Engineering @ I built an engineering team from scratch and delivered a new product to market targeted at hospital emergency departments. Focused on differentiating with a great user experience, and scaling the architecture to support 500,000 patient encounters per year. From April 2003 to May 2007 (4 years 2 months) VP of Engineering @ I built the engineering team that launched the FastTracker SaaS/managed appliance product for filtering, categorizing, and visualizing employee Internet usage. From 2000 to 2003 (3 years) Program Manager @ Network security products for employee remote access/VPN and partner access/Extranet. From 1998 to 2000 (2 years) Program Manager @ Microsoft Network (MSN), Microsoft Bookshelf, Microsoft Encarta Virtual Globe. From 1995 to 1997 (2 years)
