Stephen Gould has a B.A. in Zoology from the University of Central Florida. Gould then majored in Psychology and received his M.A. in Psychology from the University of Chicago in 1976. Gould then went on to study at Harvard University where he received his J.D. in 1979.After his JD, Gould furthered his studies at University of Cambridge where he received his Ph.D. in Ethology in 1991. Gould's dissertation focused on the phylogenetic relationships of Recent Ammonian Ecoregions.Gould's professional career began at The University of Chicago where he worked as a research associate from 1981 to 1984 and as a lecturer from 1984 to 1990. From 1990 to 1997, Gould was a lecturer in Zoology at the University of California, Davis.
