He has a degree in physics from the University of Athens and a diploma in engineering from the Technical University of Patras. Makridis started his career as a scientist at the University of Athens, where he worked on post-doctoral fellowships and research projects in materials and energy physics. He later moved to the Technical University of Patras, where he worked as a researcher in the Materials and Energy department. Makridis founded his own company, Green Tourism, in 2001. He also took on the role of editorial advisor for the journal "Materials Science and Engineering B", and was a member of the editorial board for the journals "Jornal da Fundação Galileo Galilei", "Progress in Energy and Climate" and "Energetica". Makridis is also a member of the Board of Directors for the International Energy Agency, and has been a visiting professor at Cranfield University and the University of Bradford. Makridis is also a member of the Scientific Committee for the International Water Investigation Programme.
