đ Summary
Introduction I am a software engineer who has successfully managed projects involving web services, databases and application software with multi-disciplinary teams. I am keenly interested in emerging functional and object-oriented programming languages, as well as innovative approaches to concurrency and distributed data. Teamwork The only way to go! Through my experiences in the startup world and the Royal Canadian Air Force, I have developed my leadership abilities and collaboration skills. I always strive to make meaningful, positive and lasting contributions to the projects I am involved in. Web Services I have built full-stack web applications with Ruby on Rails, and lightweight web services with Python and Javascript. Databases I managed a sophisticated MySQL installation for two years, accumulating extensive hands-on experience with SQL, replication, storage engines, stored procedures, performance analysis and troubleshooting, as well as a good understanding of database monitoring and backup practices. Application Software I have worked on a large C++ data analysis application. My contributions included identifying and eliminating a mission-critical performance bottleneck, adding a new feature and overhauling a database access library's interface (while maintaining reverse-compatibility).Entrepreneur @ - Articulated the vision for a platform tailored to the needs of member-driven clubs, teams and associations - Interviewed experts about app store and freemium SaaS business models - Developed public speaking skills by delivering pitches to successful Montreal CEOs, investors and entrepreneurs From February 2015 to April 2015 (3 months) Montreal, Canada Area2nd Lieutenant @ - Noted for excellent leadership qualities, very good planning abilities and a positive attitude during the Basic Military Officer Qualification course, at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School - Posted to 425 Tactical Fighter Squadron at 3 Wing Bagotville, for On the Job Training - Assisted 425 Squadron with mission planning and operations during deployment to 4 Wing Cold Lake, for the Maple Flag air combat exercise - Undertook the Primary Flight Training course at 3 Canadian Forces Flying Training School From November 2012 to December 2013 (1 year 2 months) Scientific Programmer / Analyst for the T2K-Canada Group @ - Provided programming, database and system administration expertise for an international neutrino oscillation experiment called T2K - Profiled and optimized SQL queries in the C++ OaSlowControlDatabase library to eliminate table scans, which were bringing a crucial MySQL server to a standstill - Added temporary table support to the C++ OaOfflineDatabase library and presented this new feature to a large T2K collaboration meeting in Japan - Implemented web services in Python to monitor thousands of grid jobs, and provide access to the experimentâs file metadata catalogue - Administered a replication chain of 4 MySQL servers, hosting the experimentâs âslow controlâ and âcalibrationâ databases - Implemented a sophisticated monitoring system that gathers 100 data points from 12 MySQL servers, produces graphs, and generates alerts (based on the Zabbix enterprise-class monitoring system) - Designed and implemented a database backup system in Python, which backs up multiple MySQL servers with different options, based on a declarative configuration file - Built a generic Python framework for extracting data from XML files and persisting it to a relational database - User support, account creation, security and package management for a cluster of 20 Linux workstations and 4 servers From October 2010 to November 2012 (2 years 2 months) Web Application Developer (co-op work term) @ - Designed a Ruby on Rails application to track thousands of biological samples - Implemented a data model based on a set of object-relational mapping classes that interact with a relational database via SQL - Created a user interface based on 5 âcontainersâ that are filled via asynchronous HTTP requests as the user âdrills downâ to a sample - Created easy-to-use versioning, access control and search subsystems From May 2006 to August 2006 (4 months) Web Application Developer (co-op work term) @ - Designed a Ruby on Rails application to track technical equipment - Met with staff from the Electronics Lab and Data Acquisition Group to discuss usage scenarios and gather functional requirements - Created a data model that associates individual items with parent types - Designed a hierarchical navigation system for efficiently browsing through categories and sorting items according to attributes - Implemented a user interface for editing items, generating reports and searching From January 2006 to April 2006 (4 months) Bachelor's Degree, Major in Computer Science, Minor in Commerce @ The University of British Columbia From 2004 to 2009 Academic Exchange, Computer Science @ UCL From 2006 to 2007 Simon Claret is skilled in: Teamwork, Leadership, Linux, Mac OS X, C++, Python, JavaScript, SQL, MySQL, Zabbix, Drone.io, Git, Emacs, Mindnode, Slack
