This commentary from one of my managers has always stuck with me because it combines two things that I believe are necessary to build a great marketing organization, resourcefulness & the entrepreneurial DNA to take an informed risk. -In a Fortune 300 company many assume marketing budgets are flush with cash & that any imaginable marketing plan could be executed. -In a startup, many assume that their marketing plans would be successful if only they had more money. In both cases the limiting factor isn't money, it is time & attention of customers & sales channels. If you have nothing relevant to say to either group, they have no time for you. If you find the right message for the right customer, at the right time, investment will follow. A great marketing organization starts with insights about your customers, market & product. Once those insights are clear, a marketing leader makes several informed bets. Some bets pay, some don’t. Some bets require investment; some require time & talent. Some bets teach you to change the route to market or the product. A great marketing organization finds & scales the bets that work, & internalizes lessons from the ones that don't for the whole company. A great marketing organization isn’t interested in just showing up, it finds ways to stand out. A great marketing organization combines art & science with purpose & innovation. A great marketing organization inspires the whole company to greater action. In my career, I've built some great marketing organizations & we've made some great bets on people, products & markets. My ability to build a marketing organization is informed by four years of work in IT as a customer, two years as a quota beating sales rep & 10+ years as a marketer in startups & big companies.
