About Scott Penberthy

💼 Past Experience

working with GoogleI worked with Google as CTO from July 2009 to January 2007 in New York, New York. I led the agile technology projects for three consumer Internet startups: Gilt, Heavy, and Photobucket. I also built engineering teams for two of Google's largest customers - Amazon and Airbus. My Cloud CTO phase. Led the computing platform with 3000 machines across 3 data centers for 50M consumers adding 100k new users per day. I also sold the advertising-supported photo business to Fox.Shifting to the Amazon cloud in 2007. Then focused on consumer video (5M users) and e-commerce (1M users) for IBM. Technologies included a rich mix of AWS, iOS, Objective C, JavaScript, Python, Java, Ruby, PHP, C, and early cloud computing. CEO at Bling Software from February 2005 to January 2007 (2 years). As founder and CEO of this wireless software company, I desired to enable a market for mobile Ajax widgets as the "next big thing" beyond ringtones and wallpaper. I thought that mobile should move to gorgeous, single function apps that would be free or sold for a few dollars. Selected as the platform for a hip new phone for an MVNO known as AMPD.When they blew up, so did we (basically).Vice President at IBM from March 1991 to February 2005 (14 years). My AI 1.0 phase. Awarded an IBM Research Fellowship to study Artificial intelligence at MIT and UW, published as "Graphs of Models" with Sanjaya Addanki. We explored reasoning with multiple models of the world, shifting perspectives whenever assumptions were challenged by evidence. With AI entering yet another winter, I pivoted to early research on the World Wide Web. This grew into building IBM's first commercial web browser for OS/2, then IBM's first commercial web server, then building an e-commerce platform that became the cornerstone of IBM Websphere. Ran teams that hosted the first web sites for IBM sponsored sporting events which evolved into the IBM Web Hosting business. Ran International Speaker Programs with Google, Disney, and Microsoft. After PwC's transformation was well underway, I was invited to address PwC's global board on what's next. I authored "The Lion and the Shark" with Mark Finn in 2015, a treatise on disruptive opportunities with blockchain (which addressed trust) and AI (which addressed reasoning).I joined the inaugural class for Udacity's self-driving car nanodegree, then left PwC to work full-time on AI. Partner at North Highland Partners from February 2005 to May 2012 (7 years 4 months). My startup phase, building web-scale consumer products, enterprise web sites, and iPhone apps. I highly recommend you give it a shot - there’s nothing like the roller coaster of running your own LLC business, trying out startups (which are mostly high-risk projects), and being scrappy.
