When Scott Carroll was older, he “learnt to think with plants.” Scott started working with plants in 2002 when he was hired as a software engineer at the then start-up Plenty. Plenty was focused on helping farmers and landowners optimize their operations. The experience with Plenty changed Scott’s view of life.Most of the time he was working on making software that made life easier for farmers, but as he transitioned from working on a software project to leading a team of software engineers, he realized that his work was helping others improve their lives more than just making the software.“I started seeing myself as a leader,” he says. “I was helping people improve their lives and the lives of their families by making their gameplay more fun and strategies more flexible.”Scott and his team developed a system that helped farmers optimize their land, water use, and nutrients. They also developed an app that helps people view landscape data in real-time.The team won a “Best In Show” award at the Regional Water Show in Las Vegas and finished first in the “Best of the Best” category.Since then, Scott and his team have been working on a number of open-source projects. One of the projects they’ve worked on recently is Grasshopper, an app that helps farmers and farmers’ markets connect.The team is always looking for ways to improve the lives of plants, people, and the planet. Scott says he is always grateful for the opportunities that he has had to work with plants and the people around him.
