He impressed opposing players with his ability to make sharp cuts, displaying the type of skills that would later be evident on the big league level. In 2007, he made his professional debut for the Los Angeles Dodgers. McFarland was given the starting assignment in the ninth inning of a game against the New York Yankees and allowed one run on four hits (two home runs) with five strikeouts over five innings of work. He was named the Dodgers’ relief pitcher for the final game of the 2007 season which they lost. In 2008, Ryan McFarland led the Dodgers in relief appearances ( fifteen appearances) and he helped to earn the Dodgers’ a National League Championship. He was the final pitcher of the season and the Dodgers defeated the San Francisco Giants in a seven inning game, becoming the first team in Dodger history to homer in the bottom of the ninth inning. In 2009, McFarland was the fastest pitcher in the National League and he helped lead the Dodgers to the National League Championship. They defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in a four game series. In 2010, Ryan McFarland led the Dodgers to the World Series, their first championship in thirty years. McFarland was the ace of the Dodgers’ bullpen and was found to have a thick best curveball. He was also effective against left-handed batters. He was the recipient of the NL Cy Young Award in 2010.
