Robert Michael Smith was born in the town of Union, New York, on January 20, 1951. His parents were immigrants who came to the United States from Hungary and Romania. Smith has spent his entire life in the New York metropolitan area, where he has been living since he was eighteen years old. After living in New York for most of his life, Smith attributes his love of art and technology to his birthplace and his family’s background.Smith graduated from Union High School in 1970. He then attended the New York Institute of Technology, where he earned his undergraduate degree in 1978. Smith then earned his graduate degree in sculpture from the New York Institute of Technology in 1990. Smith then went on to earn his Master of Science degree from the New York Institute of Technology in sculpture in 1993.Smith began his career as an artist and technology lecturer at the New York Institute of Technology in 1990. From 1990 to 1993, Smith was an instructor at the Sculpture Center and from 1993 to 1995, he was an instructor at the Parsons School of Design. From1998 to 2000, Smith was an adjunct faculty member at Pratt Institute. From 2000 to 2003, Smith was an instructor at New York University. From 2003 to 2005, Smith was an instructor at the Beijing Tomorrow Art Gallery. Smith was also a senior lecturer at The University of the Arts from January 2000 to January 2003, and an adjunct professor at Pratt Institute from January 2000 to January 2003. From 2003 to 2005, Smith was also a senior lecturer at The New School.From January 1987 to January 1990, Smith was an assistant professor at the University of North Dakota. From January 1990 to January 1995, Smith was a faculty support technician I at San Jose State University. Smith then moved to Beijing Tomorrow Art Gallery as director from January 2010 to April 2012. Smith left Beijing Tomorrow Art Gallery in April 2012.Smith has been married to his wife, Margo,since they met in 1987. They have two children.

Robert Michael Smith's education provides the foundation for his artwork and professional career as a sculptor. Smith's accomplished career as a sculptor began when he graduated from San Jose State University in 1979 with a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture. Since then, Smith has developed his sculpture coursework at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and at San Francisco State University, where he completed his MA in 1978. Smith's award-winning sculpture has been exhibited throughout the United States, and has been shown in galleries such as the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C., the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art.With his experience in sculpture, Smith has developed his Seventh Generation Force sculpture technique. This technique uses two or more small, physical pieces of art to create a more comprehensive sculpture. The Seventh Generation Force technique is a descendant of the American Realist movement and is used to create detailed and realistic sculptures.Smith has also been involved in the creative process of fashion design. Smith has worked with a variety of designers, both national and international, to create costuming designs for film and stage productions. Smith's Costume Design entitled "The Great Gatsby" was a nominee for the Season voting prize of the American Society of the Fine Arts in 2002.
