About Robert Lustig
💼 Past Experience
Robert Lustig’s early experiences in medicine were in the medical assistant role, in a small office in UCSF’s Department of Pediatrics. With the advent ofFD&C Red No. 5, then notable as the first mammalian vaccine to be licensed in the United States, Lustig applied his knowledge of endocrinology to develop treatments for hereditary conditions such as dwarfism and diabetes.He completed his undergraduate studies at UCSF in 1970 and then served as an Orthopedic Resident in the Division of Orthopedics, where he constructed and implanted artificial bones. As a Resident, Lustig introduced new technology to the field of orthopedics, including the use of artificial respirators and artificial femurs, which are now standard in orthopedic surgery. Lustig then moved to the Department of Clinical Medicine, where he was a Professor and Director of the Division of General and Critical Care Medicine. There, he developed new methods of prevention and treatment of Cardiac Diseases and Vascular Diseases, and in particular, developed the first ever heart attack/stroke preventative therapy. Lustig then moved to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and served as the Associate Chief of the Division of Reproductive Genetics and Therapeutics. In this position, he developed the firstheart attack/stroke prophylactic therapy in a woman, and also earlyBird-Cooper Syndrome prophylactic therapy in chicks. In 1992, Lustig was named the Professor of Pediatrics at UCSF. Here, he continues to develop new methods of prevention and treatment of pediatric diseases, andAdvances in Neonatal Care. Through his work at UCSF, Lustig has also maintained a strong connection to the research community, where he remains a frequent speaker on new research developments and abortion issues.

Lustig completed his M.D. from Joan & Sanford I. Weill Medical College of Cornell University in October 1976. From October 2002 to October 2006, he was a professor at the University of Texas at Austin School of Law. From October 2006 to October 2010, he was a professor at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. From October 2010 to October 2012, he was a professor at the University of Chicago Law School. From October 2012 to October 2014, he was a professor at the University of Texas at Austin Law School. From October 2014 to October 2018, he was a professor at the University of California, Irvine School of Law.
