Quality Assurance:
Helped implement a product quality improvement plan that included unit tests, design and code reviews, more emphasis on refactoring, TDD and pair programming.
Lead key initiative to define and report on quality metrics. This lent to significantly better visibility both inside and outside of the development team on how we were doing on improving the quality of application.
Development Manager @ As I joined T-Mobile, I worked with handset order team on improving the adoption of agile and scrum and making use of programming practices such as pair programming and TDD that lead to better delivery of the right features with dramatically improved quality. I also worked on clearing out a large defect backlog. One of my significant challenges was correcting the relationship between the configuration management team and the development teams they supported. I introduced a Kanban system where the development teams were the customers. This relationship is now one of high respect and cooperation.
Recently, I was asked to take on the responsibility for the group that delivers the retail applications and bring similar improvements to this team. Additionally, I am the line manager for Retail Tech team. This team is chartered with leading technology changes in our retail stores both from a software and hardware perspective. This includes leading the selection effort and winning approval for new payment terminals that among other things support Near Field Communications (NFC). I have over 50 people reporting up to me and include both onshore and offshore teams. From December 2010 to Present (5 years 1 month) AMS360 Development Manager @ I managed and led diverse group that included architecture team, senior developers, database developers, business analyst, and SDET roles with up to 20 people reporting to me. Built strong relationship with user group to include R&D committee. Attended annual user group meeting, meet one on one with customers and gave presentations to larger groups. Managed outside consultants brought in temporarily to help build product and train staff.
In 2007, AMS360 development team moved from modified waterfall development process to agile. From my perspective, this was a positive change in the following areas:
• Improvements in quality of product
• Allowing for easier changes in priorities
• Working on more of the right things
• Improved visibility across company on what was being accomplished and as priorities changes easily seen what had to be given up.
• Sustainable work pace From 2002 to 2010 (8 years) President @ I was owner and operator of Independent consulting firm that specialized in designing and writing windows applications using Microsoft technologies.
My clients included:
Kaye-Smith - built new Inventory Management application using Visual Basic and SQL Server.
Nordstrom - built Cash Register prototype using Visual Basic, SQL Server, MSMQ and POS.
AMS Services - developed Policy Upload, Insured Self Service and Custom reports using Visual Basic, C++, ASP.NET, SQL Server and Crystal Reports. From 1998 to 2002 (4 years) Development Manager @ Lead developer and or manager in delivering several key applications for AGENA for independent insurance agency market. Last position was in charge of team researching possibility of building new application using C++, MFC and COM. This team also built an imaging system as an add-on to agency management application.
Project lead and technical analyst in development of building first agency management system for Windows platform. Lead team that developed customer/policy user interface and SQL Server backend. Managed work of up to 10 developers and wrote significant parts of the C and SQL Server code for this product.
This product received high recognition from Microsoft to include: Demonstrated by Bill Gates in conference at Vienna, Austria 1994 where he termed it “World Class”; Demonstrated by Paul Maritz during his keynote address at Comdex ’94; Granted Microsoft Solution Provider Partner status at International Partner Level; Installed at all Microsoft Briefing Centers around the U.S. From 1984 to 1998 (14 years)
