From May 2015 to Present (8 months) London, United KingdomDirector of Energy and Environment @ Led BT's strategy and programmes to become a world leader in energy efficiency and sustainability. My team worked globally with all of BT's business units to deliver a win-win of cost reduction and environment improvement - supporting BT's Net-Good ambition. The role of the Energy and Environment Unit was to source the lowest carbon energy at market leading prices, to drive energy efficiency programmes to bring down consumption, and to manage all of BT's environment risks and obligations. During my time at BT, I created the Energy and Environment Unit and we achieved the following results: 1. £143m annual energy savings to the business and an 80% reduction in BT's carbon emissions in the UK. 2. The only Telco in Europe and potentially in the World, to reduce energy consumption for six consecutive years. 3. The largest smart control networks in the world, with 60,000 building sensors, 85,000 smart meters, 18,000 controllers, and 1.1million data points a day, to optimise energy usage across 8000 buildings. 4. Developed a smart grid system that allowed 1600 buildings, spread regionally across the UK grid, to simultaneously switch to back-up power, controlled by a central command centre. 5. Sourced and contracted more renewable energy than any other company in the UK (£270m/year), and secured some of the largest long term (20 year) energy deals in the UK. 6. Led the way in creating the first A-G energy label to classify the source of our energy, and launched this to the market via the Aldersgate Group to enable all companies to start using this energy label as the standard carbon classification on all energy bills. 7. Engaged all BT's employees in the process, with over 13,000 energy champions working with us across the business. the end result was 85% of all BT people saying they are taking action to reduce energy and carbon for BT. From May 2007 to April 2015 (8 years) London, United KingdomSenior Secondment @ UK Climate Change Strategy: Appointed on secondment from the Energy Saving Trust to the UK government, to develop new climate change strategies for local authorities and to address the growing market for carbon offsetting: • Led the development of a new climate change strategy and created a new performance framework on carbon emissions for the 400 local authorities in the UK. • Developed a government accreditation strategy for carbon offsetting in the UK, to provide consumers with clear trusted information on carbon offset products. From July 2006 to May 2007 (11 months) Head of Business Unit @ Overall responsibility for the Transport Energy business unit. I served as a member of the leadership team of the Energy Saving Trust. Responsibilities included: • Leading the UK government investment fund in clean vehicle technology • Managing the clean-tech market stimulus programmes to encourage consumer take up • Providing fleet advice and consultancy services to businesses across the UK • Leading CO2 labelling on vehicles From 2003 to 2006 (3 years) Senior Engagement Manager @ Sustainability Strategy, Renewable Energy and New Technology Ventures. Navigant Consulting is a large international consulting firm (c.1500 people) with headquarters in Boston USA. I led business engagement across Europe in the renewable energy sector, including an international business strategy for Shell Solar - identified new business opportunities and business models to position Shell as a market leader in the growing market for low carbon products and services. From August 2002 to July 2003 (1 year) Managing Director @ Non Profit organisation providing audio based internet information to rural communities over freephone numbers. I founded this not-for-profit enterprise to develop audio content services via telephones for people in poor rural communities. I developed this idea while working on voice portal technology at Arthur D Little. Through utilising this new technology and applying his experience in Africa, he wrote a white paper entitled “Oral traditions, bridging the digital divide”, which was published at the Davos Summit. I was encouraged by a number of senior representatives who attended Davos, to take this idea through to fruition and hence founded “Project WorldTalk” with a team of consultants from Arthur D Little, Accenture, and IBM. The team developed the core technology platform with funding and equipment from Vodafone, Cable and Wireless, IBM, Intel, and Shell. The pilot services provided information on Health, Aids prevention, Grants, House building, and Farming. The project concluded with a presentation to the South African government who later decided to roll out the provision of similar services, backed by large-scale call centres to generate local employment. From October 2001 to October 2002 (1 year 1 month) Strategy Consulting @ Managed client engagements, leading teams to develop new innovative solutions to business problems in the energy and telecommunications sectors - winning success with our clients at board level. One of my major assignments involved leading a new venture team at the BG group - developing a market entry strategy and business plan for a combined heat and power micro-generator. I led the development of the B2C marketing strategy, and formulated the commercial business model for launching this product to market. Managed a team of consultants to provide the strategic direction to a company launching an eMarketplace in the construction industry. Developed a strategic marketing plan for a telecommunications company to launch a communications portal. Co-managed the development of the diversification strategy for a leading telecommunications company that faced declining market demand. We created profiles of 35 new e-business opportunities that would leverage the competences of the company. Summary business plans were developed for the top three ventures which included internet based mobile reselling, hosted online customer service and an internet portal. Conducted due diligence on a merger between two oil and gas services companies operating in the North Sea. From September 1999 to September 2001 (2 years 1 month) Systems and Logistics @ Led an MIS project team to design the requirements for the ERP system in a company division. The ERP system included a Hilco shop-floor execution system, a Broner production planning system and an Oracle GEMS system. Managed the staff of the logistics warehouse department and managed the transport team of drivers. Developed supply chain relationships with key customers, working at board and operational levels - resulted in over 50% reductions in stock levels. Served as chairman of the company disciplinary committee.
