Hi there! My name is Remko and I am an ambitious, studious and - most of all - enthusiastic software engineer. I strongly believe in the principles of software craftsmanship and approach the art of programming as such. This means I continuously try to improve myself by honing my theoretical and practical skills. My maxim: know what you do, why you do it and how you can most efficiently do it. Besides this I strongly believe in the power of the Rhineland model - as opposed to the Anglo-Saxon model -, where responsibility is based on trust and not on fear. The Agile movement can be seen as a popular exponent of this model. The focus lies on continuity, long term quality and skilled team members. Needless to say, I am a team player. My educational background is formed by a master's degree in Systems and Software Engineering at the University of Groningen spiced up with a side of Philosophy. My specialties as a software engineer are building enterprise software (Java EE) and web development. My strengths as a person are my passion for IT, high quality standards, inexhaustible curiosity, hunger for knowledge and assertiveness. And I smile a lot. At the moment I have my attention focused on Functional Reactive Programming and the Scala ecosystem, comprising a.o. One of the activities of the Innovation Board is composing the trend reports (twice a year), i.e. determining the upcoming and current trends among our customers and the rest of the world. Implementing the main API for the platform in Scala. From March 2014 to April 2015 (1 year 2 months) Programmer / Analyst @ Working as a Java developer on project ROCS (Road Operation Control Systems). ROCS is a central system used within TNT to manage all linehaul movements. It supports business processes for planning, execution and monitoring daily operations and cost calculations. ROCS consists of a multiple Java applications (back-end) that can be accessed by .NET clients via Webservices. The Java part runs in a heavily clustered Websphere and Oracle environment. The older parts are based on a strongly service oriented architecture, implemented using J2EE/EJB and Hibernate. Newer parts also involve Spring (a.o. Batch, WS). From October 2009 to February 2014 (4 years 5 months) Secretary @ Exstudiantes is a sports platform meant for alumni, with - at this moment - branches in Groningen and Utrecht. The idea is to provide an environment where these former students can meet and stay in touch with other alumni. This all in order to give them the opportunity to enlarge their network in a sportive environment.
