About Philippe Serhal

📖 Summary

Software Engineer working on tangible problems that I deeply care about. Currently specialized in Node.js, Express, MongoDB, redis, AngularJS, CoffeeScript, HTML5, TDD/BDD. Working on the Operations Engineering team at Good Eggs, building software to support a just-in-time logistics model to sustainably get great food from your uncle's farm to your neighbor's door, while supporting all the people involved along the way. (Spoiler alert: it's not easy.)Software Engineer @ Good Eggs' mission is to grow and sustain local food systems worldwide – via an innovative just-in-time supply-chain logistics model. I currently work on the Operations Engineering team, developing software for day-to-day food fulfillment operations, i.e. ordering from hundreds of producers; managing the products we buy and sell; receiving thousands of products every day; managing in-house inventory; picking products from inventory (and directly from receiving) just in time; packing into customer orders; delivering orders to customers' homes; and managing errors and shorts all along the process. Nearly our entire ecosystem is on a Node.js / Express / MongoDB stack written in CoffeeScript, with systems communicating via a combination of (more or less) RESTful APIs and RabbitMQ event queues. Internal ops front-ends are built with AngularJS. During my time on the team, our tools have evolved from a single monolithic operations application to an ecosystem of 12 (and counting) highly focused microservices, clearly mapping to well-defined domains (e.g. inventory, product catalog, purchase orders, etc.). This has notably led to increases in developer productivity, ability to iterate faster, and independent scalability of user features. I have been deeply involved in the development of a completely redesigned marketplace product availability system, queried by the customer-facing market website, taking inputs from purchase orders (orders sent to foodmakers, food not yet received), current in-house inventory, custom by-day capacities set by foodmakers (e.g. I can make at most 45 loaves of sourdough on Tuesdays), and current sales. The system uses redis as a primary, persistent database to cache all these inputs from external systems. Daily stand-up meetings; weekly retrospectives; iteration planning; continuous integration and deployment; lots of pair programming; test everything. From November 2014 to Present (1 year 2 months) Research Assistant @ Functional and Structural Bioinformatics Lab, IRIC Developed an algorithm for quantification, visualization, and correction of spatial bias in DNA microarray raw data; published, presented at multiple conferences, and released as free software (R/C++). Worked on developing a modern approach to integrative analysis of multiple, dispersed, interrelated, heterogeneous, voluminous biological data sets. Developed proof of concept with distributed Node.js data servers and lightweight Bootstrap + d3.js integrative data visualization front-end, serving live clinical research data to a group of ∼40 leukemia researchers. From May 2010 to March 2014 (3 years 11 months) Montreal, Canada AreaTeaching Assistant @ - Programming 1 (JavaScript) – Winter 2013 - Applied Bioinformatics (proteomics unit) – Winter 2013 - Applied Programming for Genomics (Perl) – Fall 2010 - Programming 2 (Java) – Winter 2010 - Programming 1 (Java) – Fall 2009 From September 2009 to May 2013 (3 years 9 months) Montreal, Canada AreaResearch Intern @ Developed a complete DNA microarray image analysis software package in C++, implementing both classic and novel gridding, segmentation, quantification, and normalization algorithms. Developed a specialized normalization algorithm to address spatial bias issues in tiling array data.
