In the early 1990s, after a few years of working as a driver for an auto parts distributor, Philip Bershad decided he’d have to have a career in ownership. He moved up through the ranks at CH Robinson, a prominent sales company in Greater Chicago. When he was six months into his four-year stint as the sales manager in the Chicago area, he was approached by CH Robinson’s president, asking if he would be interested in running the company as a separate entity.The president and Lichtenstein, the company-wide administrator, had been looking to shift the company’s sales force away from what they saw as a selling-light town like Chicago to a more metropolitan area. Bershad was excited by the opportunity to take the company to a new level.The move to a larger city allowed for a greater focus on quality customer service and developing a more consolidated sales operation. It also meant a shift in focus from the company’s traditional retail operation to the wholesale market.The president and Lichtenstein were excited by the move, but it didn’t work out as planned. The company rapidly lost its market share to suppliers in the larger city. But Bershad stuck around, booking new sales leads and continuing to develop the company’s salesforce.He would eventually move up through the company, becoming president and owner when the company merged with CH Robinson in 2000. During his time as owner, the company skiesrocketed in sales. And he would continue to do so as chair of the sales committee, leading the company to new heights.
