Paul Rippon has been involved in the banking industry since he was a youngster. At 16, he started driving a tractor to work on his family's farm in west Norfolk. After a few years of experience, he switched to working in the banking industry, most notably as a risk officer at a small bank. He then moved to Starling Bank, where he was responsible for the risk management of new and exiting loans. He also worked as a deputy assistant farmhand and tractor driver at Barnacre Alpacas. In 2006, he started lecturing in the banking industry at The London Institute of Banking & Finance, and in 2018, he started heads up banking operations at AIB. He also has a background in teaching, having worked as a Learning Coach (part-time) at The London Institute of Banking & Finance from January 2001 to June 2018. Paul Rippon was born in 1951 in Perth, Western Australia. Rippon started his working life in the insurance industry, first at AAMI and then at Liberty countries, where he was responsible for the risk and regulatory strategy of AAMI and Liberty countries. He later rose through the ranks of a leading Australian insurer, becoming risk leader at the company, followed by deputy risk leader and managing director at Braniff Airways Australia, before moving to London in 1998 to start Starling Bank. In January 2014, Rippon was appointed as the Chief Risk Officer and Co-founder at Starling Bank.Since then, he has overseen several significant transitions at Starling Bank, including the introduction of a digital banking platform, stressedtesting, and cross-house-border risk management. He also oversaw the overhaul of the mortgage product offering and services, through the introduction of a new product sub-division and the launch of new products such as AndraFX.Since the early days of Starling Bank, Rippon has been an outspoken advocate for risk-focused strategies and transformative change. He has been a driving force behind all the Bank's social responsibility and heritage initiatives, as well as its core objectives of investigating, diagnosing, and managing risk. He is also a highly visible champion for whistleblowers, chairing the whistleblowers anti-corruption tribunal, and engaging with the media to advocate for player integrity.Rippon is a highly sought-after speaker and has presented at events around the world.His speaking engagements have included talks on banking and risk management, digital banking, transparency and imputation, financial crime and regulation, young bankers, la carte banking,Jamie Oliver's new hoover, and more.
