I am a SQL Server / Business Intelligence professional with 15+ years experience across a variety of industry sectors. I like to design OLTP, OLAP and Data Warehousing solutions which not only perform well but are also flexible, secure and robust. Whilst the logical design is important in implementing the business requirements I sometimes think the actual physical design is overlooked which is why I take particular care in designing the constraints, indexes and data types. I have worked on all versions of SQL Server between 2000 and 2014 and have experience of the full Business Intelligence Stack – SSIS, SSAS & SSRS. My particular favourite is tuning queries using Query plans, indexes and Statistics but the best thing about SQL Server is that there is always something to learn and something different to do. I particularly enjoy collaborating closely with business users. I like to understand their requirements and objectives and bounce ideas around to achieve a solution. I’m also equally happy writing code. I enjoy following new industry trends and keeping up to date through books, blogs and video sites such as Pluralsight. I also have several Microsoft Certifications on SQL Server 2005, 2008 & 2012. I’m not one for keeping all this knowledge to myself so I’m also happy to help and mentor colleagues. Having a broad depth of knowledge also gives me the insight to try and recommend solutions which will fit a client’s requirements and budget. Outside of work, I’m a slightly obsessive golfer and I am also learning German. Sadly, I’m not fluent (currently about B1 standard) but I keep persevering with it. One day, I would like to work in a German speaking country and be able to read, write and speak it with confidence.
