Engineering Project Manager - II @ From July 2015 to Present (6 months) Senior Technical Manager - Dev & Mfg / Quality - Specialty Photonics Division @ Responsible for the Specialty Fiber product line development and engineering group consisting of multi-discipline Scientists/Engineers and specialized technicians. Completely rebuilt the team(s) and infrastructure following the Telecom “Bubble” Burst and was instrumental in re-achieving profitability for the site, supporting a 50% annual growth in specialty product demand. Actively developed a myriad of New Products for High Power and Sensing markets while strongly contributing to revenue and OI, despite heavy (20% yearly) EDF fiber price erosion and increasing product performance/reliability demands.
Managed multiple process and product development projects in tandem, closely working with internal and external customers in defining deliverables, prioritizing resources, and driving projects to completion.
Consistently met and exceeded Key Performance Metrics (On-Time Delivery, Customer Complaints, Inventory Turns, Cost Reduction) as well as achieving high marks on key Customer “Report Cards”. Effected a 52% reduction in scrap via application of six sigma tools and lean methods, redesigning mfg processes impacting first pass yields while also doubling capacity. A combination of Lean Events, Process automation, Technology advancements, and “smart” purchases reduced costs, improved efficiency, and provided resources and focus to drive New Product Development.
Worked closely with Global Product Management & Marketing, defining and managing Product and Technology Roadmaps in coordination with other OFS global mfg facilities. From November 2001 to March 2014 (12 years 5 months) Technical Manager - Engineering - Specialty Fiber Devices @ Led a cross-functional team of Mechanical, Electrical, and Software Engineers in support of existing products and new development projects: Specialty Fiber, Gratings, Optical Channel Monitors (OCM), Power Combiners, EDF temperature control package, Tunable dispersion Compensators (TDC), etc. Enabled new process capabilities, mfg capacity, yield improvements, and new designs meeting more stringent demands.
Established weekly team meetings to review overall schedules and priorities. Held working joint-meetings with partnered engineers and managers from the Development and Mfg groups, per major project.
Added Polymer Engineering experience to the team and acquired all necessary test equipment (under severe budget constraints) to implement incoming inspection and other QC programs for existing coating types. Established baseline characterization data and worked closely with R&D in support of new coatings.
Established monthly “training sessions” that allowed employees to present a technical topic to the site, promoting individual development and leadership qualities.
Established Version Control for internally developed software and mechanical designs. Managed site software licenses and promoted sharing and use of “best practices.” From 1999 to November 2001 (2 years) Member of Technical Staff - Specialty Fiber Devices @ Coordinated the design, installation and overall project management of $1.2M capital
equipment in a new facility (Somerset, NJ). Setup high-purity gas & chemical delivery systems, Fiber Draw Tower, and Fiber Prooftest/Rewind & measurement equipment into a Class 10000 “clean-room” development and mfg laboratory. Fully met budget and schedule requirements on time to meet accelerating demand and eliminating dependency on the existing R&D facility. Ramped-up production at a rate of 4 to 5 times the expected volume, yielding a record year, while meeting all quality goals.
SPC: Quantified process capability of previous site (glass/ctg geometry, strength, PMD, Loss). Procured and set-up fiber measurement and verification instrumentation. Designed and implemented real-time SCADA (Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition). Established standard procedures for quality assurance. Reduced prooftest break frequency by a factor of 4 as compared to legacy performance.
Passed numerous internal and customer qualification audits. Worked closely with the Reliability team to produce a Qualification Plan and subsequent Qualification Reports for key customers. From 1997 to 1999 (2 years) Member of Technical Staff - Specialty Fiber Devices @ MCVD System Design & Fabrication: Designed and installed chemical delivery heating systems for a new & improved MCVD system used in the development and mfg of rare earth-doped optical fiber. Setup networked control and monitoring, real-time digital control loops, high-purity plumbing, safety mechanisms, and other opto-electronic/mechanical sensors and indicators.
Bragg and Long-Period Gratings: Worked closely with R&D scientists implementing and demonstrating proof-of-concepts and inventing novel fiber grating processing technology.
Miniature R&D specialty fiber draw tower: Designed, constructed, and managed a specialty fiber draw tower, enabling quick turn-around and rapid prototyping.
ISO 9000 Quality Assurance Standard: Active contributor (and Document Control Manager) in establishing ISO 9000 certification for specialty fiber and other emerging products. From 1994 to 1997 (3 years)
