I’m a former C/C++ Software Development Engineer who has spent the last 7 years (of 17 total years in industry) building and managing large cross-functional teams to solve real business problems. The teams I’ve built and managed have spanned multiple large scale platform technologies, including an AWS Service from soup to nuts, merchandiser focused UI and tools for customer marketing and segmentation, services that power all personalization on Amazon.com and our subsidiaries, a multi-petabyte data warehouse service, and finally HBO's client applications and framework. I have experience working with multiple common project management methodologies, including scrum, Kanban, waterfall, and several hybrids to deliver complex systems on time with limited resources. I've also presented technical content at conferences and directly to our customers on multiple occasions.
I've worked closely with program and product management and test teams to deliver high quality distributed systems based on technical specifications that my teams authored and I directed. I've also led large cross-organizational teams that required coordination between disparate business divisions with competing timelines and goals. I’m particularly interested in career development and coaching of my team members and peers across my organization. During my tenure, I've coached dozens of employees through career advancement or transitions they wanted to make.
Director of Software Development @ I manage and coach the team, and drive the roadmap and technical priorities for HBO's client applications. This includes frameworks and client applications for desktop, mobile, console, and a host of other devices. We're looking for talented people to join us to deliver the best media available to our customers. From May 2015 to Present (8 months) Sr. Software Development Manager - Personalization Platform and Targeting Platform @ I manage and coach the teams, and drive the roadmap and technical priorities for the Targeting and Personalization Platforms. The Personalization platform owns and operates all the services that power all personalization at Amazon.com and our subsidiaries. I liaise with our subsidiaries and Retail personalization teams to coordinate on larger business objectives. I help the managers set priorities, staff the teams, and engage with our customers to ensure we deliver the right features at the right cadence for their businesses.
The Targeting Platform is a team of developers and a manager who own and operate the customer behavior data warehouse and tools merchandisers use to target customer sets for online or offline merchandising activities. The customer behavior data warehouse vends petabytes data to dozens of other services. I help set priorities, work with partner teams, and drive the team to accomplish their goals in the context of larger business objectives. I also work with the team and help define the technical vision.
In addition to this, I am an Amazon Bar Raiser and participate in interview loops 2-3x/week for teams across the company, including senior leadership positions. From February 2014 to May 2015 (1 year 4 months) General Manager of AWS Simple Email Service @ As GM for an AWS service (http://aws.amazon.com/ses), I owned the entire software stack, feature delivery, customer communication, financials, operations, and roadmap for the service. To do this, I grew the dev team from a single small dev team in Romania to a total team comprised of a team of TPMs, a dev team in Seattle, and doubled the size of the Romanian dev team.
I worked with my peer AWS service owners to align with their business goals and priorities. This included providing an inbound and outbound email stack for Amazon WorkMail and managing the email Postmaster team for all of AWS. I also owned reporting the financial and operational metrics to our SVP and his team of direct report VPs. I was able to grow the service from to 10x the gross revenue of what it was when I took over the role. Given the service was price disruptive; our primary goal was to remain cash flow neutral, while still offering compelling features for customers. From July 2011 to February 2014 (2 years 8 months) Greater Seattle AreaSoftware Development Manager @ I began my career at Amazon working as a TPM, and then a few months later managing the Caching and the Website Rendering Platform teams. The Caching team delivered high volume and low latency ephemeral storage products for use across Amazon’s service infrastructure. The Website Rendering Platform team owned and developed the software stack used for all of our Perl and Java based web applications, including our gateway page, product detail pages, checkout, and search pages.
I was the technical lead as well as the product owner for both these teams. I coordinated our deployments and feature releases with our customers, and aligned with the business priorities and needs. This included significant latency reductions for Amazon.com and other company wide initiatives. From June 2009 to June 2011 (2 years 1 month) Technical Program Manager @ I'm the TPM for the Product Aggregator team. During my tenure on the team, we shipped an entirely new version Java based version of the Aggregator running on a significantly more efficient graph generation platform.
As the central authority for product information at Amazon, I interacted with the 40-60 service owners that our aggregator service called. I managed all the customer contacts, acted as a Scrum Master for the team, and owned the near term product backlog. From February 2008 to June 2009 (1 year 5 months) Software Development Engineer @ I was a developer embedded in the user mode PnP team. My main responsibility was delivery of a technology called Function Discovery (FD) that provided a uniform API for resource discovery. This included software resources as well as network connected Web Services and UPnP devices. My work on Windows 7 beta 1 culminated in the early prototype of the all the discovery plumbing that fed data to the “Printers and Devices” folder.
For the Windows Vista timeframe, I wrote the Registry FD provider, UPnP FD provider, and Web Services FD provider. I also was responsible for the designing and delivering eventing system in the FD Win32 API to enable new devices to advertise themselves to any open FD queries they matched. From March 2004 to February 2008 (4 years) Software Development Engineer @ I worked with a team of 3 other developers on the Cartman Setup Engine for SBS, BackOffice, Exchange Platinum, and others. I also owned and developed the Windows Mobile easy pairing system for SBS 4.5, and was the tech lead and primary developer on a team of 3 for the SBS Monitoring System. From February 1998 to March 2004 (6 years 2 months)
