About Omer Mahmood

💼 Past Experience

I started my engineering career within a company that I was largely happy with – Pill Club. I was given the opportunity to work on a range of different projects and am grateful for the challenges that were put in front of me. Over the course of my time at Pill Club, I helped to grow the company and grow the teams within it. While at Pill Club, I helped to introduce a new product to the market and helped to grow the company’s user base. I was also responsible for the engineering efforts to build the data visualizations product and the mobile engineering efforts to create a great product for the mobile market. I am proud to have spent time at Workday and am excited for the future of the company.


🎓 Education

Omer Mahmood has a Doctor of Philosophy (Computer Science) from the University of Sydney, where he also graduated with a MSc in I.T Software Development from Griffith University in 1999. Mahmood has also worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at University of Melbourne researching Adaptive Profile Driven Data Caching and Prefetching in Mobile Environments from 2004 to 2006, and at the University of Technology, Sydney researching Mobile Infrastructure, Demand- Side Controller and BlackBerry Interface from 2006 to 2009. Mahmood has since started his own consultancy, Innovative Technologies Group, which specialises in using technology to improve professional development, career readiness, and workforce diversity.Mahmood’s research suffers from a lack of evidence. In his recent papers, Mahmood falls back on ad-hoc, qualitative evidence from his personal interactions with testusers, users of his work products, and others with complementary skills. In his paper “Ad-hoc Qualitative Research for Career Development and Work readiness”, Mahmood does not go into great detail about the methodologies used, and instead relies on personal interactions with testusers and users of his work products to provide evidence that ad-hoc qualitative methods are useful for career development and work readiness. In this way, Mahmood’s research is not only rudimentary but also potentially unreliable as it relies on personal insights and conversations which may not be representative of the general experience of the test-user population.In his paper “The moderating role of self-efficacy in work readiness”, Mahmood uses a more qualitative approach to examine the role self-efficacy has on work readiness. In this paper, Mahmood examines the impact of self-efficacy on work readiness across three different groups: first, those who have low self-efficacy (i.e. who feel they do not understand how they can improve their performance), second, those who have high self-efficacy (i.e. who feel very confident in their ability to improve performance), and third, those who are in the middle of the levels of self-efficacy (i.e. who are both high and low self-efficacy). Mahmood finds that for those in the middle of the self-efficacy spectrum, the most effective way to improve work readiness is to have a sense of control over their resources and activity spaces.
